What AdBlue Does

AdBlue is a urea solution injected into the exhaust of most modern diesels to convert nitrogen oxides into harmless nitrogen and water. The system — known as SCR (Selective Catalytic Reduction) — involves a tank, pump, injector, heater and several NOx sensors. It works well when it works. The problem is that every one of those components can fail, and none of them are cheap.

The Usual Suspects

  • NOx sensors — the most common failure, often £300–£600 each fitted
  • AdBlue injector crystallisation — blocks dosing and throws quality faults
  • Pump and tank heater failures — common in cold winters
  • Level sensor faults — the tank is full but the car disagrees
